Matt Southward, Ph.D.

Dr. Southward is a research assistant professor with 6 years of experience providing evidence-based cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based treatments for people with a range of mood, anxiety, trauma, substance, and personality disorders. At the CEH, Matt is specializing in providing the Unified Protocol for anxiety, depressive, and related disorders. Matt graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. He earned his Master’s and PhD from The Ohio State University and completed his predoctoral internship at Duke University Medical Center, where he specialized in providing Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder. His research interests involve how to personalize and optimize our current psychotherapy treatments. He is specifically interested in how people flexibly apply a variety of strategies to best manage their emotions and how people learn to implement high-quality emotion management strategies in their daily life.
